Creating a Sense of Menace and Unease in Poetry A Comparison of four poems which create a sense of Menace and unease I have chosen ‘Hitcher’ as it gradually builds up tension and unease throughout the poem, the poem is quite personal as it is relating to a man and his everyday life. I chose this also because the poem is written as if it was a story. Hitcher is the story of a man who is under a lot of pressure from work and feels the need to rebel. He hires a car and picks up a hitchhiker. The driver hits the hitchhiker with a krooklok in the face, and then throws him out onto the road. ‘Education for leisure’ is a chilling poem; I chose this because it had a leading storyline which leads the audience to a point of†¦show more content†¦Fired.† This implies that he has had enough, and that he feels value less. The pressure of work has got to him and he is unable to cope with it any more. His boss (indicated by italics) gives the impression that he has a very strict and precise office job and that he is cannot take this pressure and is willing to give it all up. His emotions at this point indicate he is worn out and he feels that his own life is not worth living. It is also showing that he is bored and that work is the only thing that keeps him busy. The stress of work is now concerning him and he needs something to occupy him. â€Å"I let him have it on the top road out of Harrogate- once with the head, then six times with the krooklok in the face† This highlights the fact that he is a very aggressive and violent person. The way that it is described shows that it does not really bother him that someone’s life had been lost. The object that he uses ‘the krooklok’ indicates that he did not just use the strength of his own had but something else. The aggression that is released when he hurts the hitchhiker, is the build up of all his feelings from the pressure of work and other areas of life which lead him to be a very violent person. His also hints that he is jealous of the hitchhikers’ freedom and that his life is much more care free. â€Å"The truth he said, was blowin’ in the wind† illustrates that the hitchhiker felt he was free, as was willing to go

In The Custom House Hawthorne communicates his apprehension for the persecutory impulses of his ancestors who have mingled their earthly substance with the soil, until no small portion of it must necessarily be akin to the moral frame wherewith, for a little while, I walk the streets (1309). Long before the United States had its freedom from Great Britain, women have been fighting to have the same equal rights as men. This paper focuses on the Womens Suffrage Movement which was an outgrowth of the Womens Rights Movement that began in the United States in 1848 at the Seneca Falls Womens Convention and goes through the 1920s and the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote. I will also discuss several groups and organizations that assisted and supported their endeavors to bring about change as well as, give my own personal reaction to this movement. (1, 2, 3, 4) The first Womens Conference was held in Seneca Falls, New York in July 1848, this meeting kicked off the Womens Suffrage Movement and was under the control of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott with input from Martha Coffin Wright, Mary Ann MClintock and Jane Hunt. The document was based on the Declaration of Independence and stated that women and men are created equal and therefore women should have legal and social equality with men, including voting rights. This declaration put into writing the inequality women in the United States had been facing for years, as well as called for women to petition and stand up for their rights. On the second day of the convention, the day men were allowed to attend, The Declaration of Sentiments and Grievances was adopted by the assembly. Twelve resolutions, which called for equal rights for women were passed. Some of these included, property rights, equality in divorce, access to higher education, the right to participate and b e represented in government, employment equality, and voting rights (Cokely, 2017). The only resolution that did not immediately pass was the one that called for womens suffrage, allowing women the right to vote. After a long debate, that included the support of Frederick Douglas, the resolution passed. The passage of this last resolution that called for allowing women to vote, was met with much backlash. Some supporters of womens rights even revoked their support over the passage of this resolution. This movement marked the beginning of the womens suffrage movement in the United States. The womens suffrage movement felt strongly that women should have equal voting rights as men and that no individual should be denied the right to vote based on sex, race, or color. (4) Many womens conventions were held and organizations formed, in the coming years that supported womens suffrage as well as, many other rights for women. These organizations and conventions not only gained notice but also brought about change. In 1850, the first National Womens Rights Convention was held in Worcester, Massachusetts. The meeting attracted over 1,000 participants. This meeting set a standard and established a committee which marked the start of organized work for womens rights. By this time womens suffrage was a large part of the movement. The National Womens Rights convention continued to be held yearly until 1860 (Imbornoni).(2, 4)In 1869, two womens suffrage organizations were formed. The first was the National Woman Suffrage Organization, which was formed by Elizabeth Stanton and Susan B. Anthony. They were a radical organization that sought to have an amendment ratified for womens suffrage. The other organization, The American Womens Suffrage Organization, led by Lucy Stone, was more on the conservative side and sought each state to grant women the privilege of voting. The two organizations differed on their views of the 15th Amendment, which granted African American men the right to vote. The National Woman Suffrage Association objected to the 15th Amendment. They believed if black men were allowed to vote, women should be allowed to do so too. The American Womens Suffrage Organization supported the amendment they believed that women would win the vote soon. Eventually the two combined forced to form the National American Womens Suffrage Organization in 1890 (National, 2016).(4, 5) In an effort to gain attention to womens suffrage, in 1872, in Rochester, New York, Susan B Anthony, along with 15 other women demanded to register and vote in the presidential election. During this time, women were not allowed to vote in New York and their requested was refused. The women registered and cast their ballet anyway and two weeks later were arrested. A year later, they were found guilty of illegal voting (Peck, 1989). Although she was arrested, convicted and fined, she refused to pay the fine and the case was dropped. Eventually the determination of these women, began to wear down the government and several states began to allow women to vote. Wyoming became the first in 1869, Colorado in 1893, Utah in 1895 and Idaho in 1896 (Lewis, 2017). The voting boundaries for women were greatly expanding. (2,4) In 1916, the National Womans Party, led by Alice Paul and Lucy Burns, felt they needed to handle the matter of womens suffrage with a more extreme approach than past parties. After meeting with President Woodrow Wilson, and having the matter of womens suffrage dismissed. In an effort to gain public attention and bring about change, members of this party marched, staged civil disobedience acts and even picketed the White House (Woman, 2010). During these acts of disobedience, several were arrested for picketing and blocking traffic. (5) In 1917, World War I began, and women contributed at home to the war effort, which also helped end the remaining resistance to womens suffrage. By 1919, 37 states had given women suffrage or partial suffrage. In 1920, the womens suffrage amendment, the 19th Amendment, was ratified. This ratification gave American women the right to vote, and ended almost a century of struggle (Seneca, 2010). (5) Prior to the womens movement and its outgrowth, the womens suffrage movement, women were looked down upon, politically, socially and economically. They were denied many basic rights and viewed as less than men. Many people during this time believe that a womans role was to clean, cook and care for her family. Educational opportunities were lacking, they had few job opportunities, their pay was very low, and a lot of the time they were working in hazardous conditions. They were severely discriminated against and denied many rights such as voting. Once women began to be involved in reform movements, it inspired other women to do so as well and to fight for equal rights as men. The movements opened many doors for women and ultimately challenged womens place in society. It also gave women a voice to make a difference in the world around them, something they had never experienced before. They formed Organizations and leagues that helped themselves and other women in the United States obtain equal rights and suffrage. The 19th Amendment granted women suffrage and with that, the opportunity to have a part in public affairs of society through political and civil avenues. The passing of this amendment gave them a voice in public elections, by granting them the right to vote. The womens suffrage movement, along with the womens rights movement, ultimately changed the world for women today. Today women can vote, own property, have a career, pursue an education and pretty much achieve whatever goals they set for themselves. (6)Changes that took place due to the womens movement and the suffrage movement can be attributed to several hard working, determined women who pushed and pushed and never gave up on the dream of equal rights for women. Although women such as Susan B Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott were not actually deemed social workers during this time, by todays standards, today they would have most likely been. They signed and circulated petitions, made speeches, publically advocated for equal womens rights and suffrage in state legislature, womens conventions and womens social organizations, marched in parades, picketed and s taged civil events and argued for their cause. It was a very long and difficult battle which consisted of many challenging factors for women, specifically obtaining suffrage. Each woman who participated, was committed to the enfranchisement of American women. They were committed to changing society and making a better world for themselves and future generations of women. (7) As a woman myself, I am extremely grateful to these women, who many years ago, stood against social standards that were holding women back. Their efforts made it so women today have the freedom to vote, own property, have careers, obtain an education, receive fair wages and so much more. One of the biggest reasons I have chosen this subject to write about is so I can become better informed about what exactly these brave, courageous women of the past did to make a difference not only in their own lives but in the lives of so many future generations of women. These women, stood strong on their beliefs, gained the attention of the government and the United States population and changed history for so many women. The battle was not easy, but they continued onward and in the end wer e victorious. In this essay, I have focused on the womens suffrage movement which sprang from the womens rights movement that began at the Seneca Falls Womens Rights Convention in 1848, and ended with the ratification of the 19th Amendment that granted American women voting rights. I have also discussed several groups and organizations that assisted and took action to support them in their endeavors to bring about change. Lastly, I have given my personal reaction to this particular movement.

Summary of A Separate Peace by John Knowles As the novel opens, Gene Forrester returns to Devon, the New Hampshire boarding school he attended during World War II. Gene has not seen Devon for 15 years, and so he notices the ways in which the school has changed since he was a student there. Strangely, the school seems newer, but perhaps, he thinks, the buildings are just better taken care of now that the war is over. Gene walks through the campus on a bleak, rainy November afternoon, revisiting the buildings and fields he remembers—and especially two places he recalls as â€Å"fearful sites.† At the First Academic Building, he enters the foyer to look closely at the white marble steps. Then he trudges across the playing fields to the river in search of a particular tree and finally recognizes it by its long limb over the water and the scars on its trunk. The tree, he thinks, is smaller than he remembers. The chapter section ends with Gene heading back to shelter through the rain. The second section opens during the summer of 1942 when Gene is 16. He is attending a special Summer Session at Devon, designed to speed up education to prepare the boys for the military draft in their senior year. Gene stands at the same tree with his best friend and roommate, Phineas (nicknamed Finny), and three other boys, Elwin Lepellier (Leper), Chet Douglass, and Bobby Zane. The tree seems enormous to Gene, but Finny suddenly decides to climb it and jump into the river, just like the Devon 17 year olds, who are training for military service. Finny jumps and dares Gene to follow. Against his better judgment, Gene climbs the tree and also jumps, but the three others refuse. . The shared danger of jumping brings Finny and Gene closer. While the rest of the boys hurry ahead at the sound of the bell for dinner, the roommates playfully wrestle until they are late for the meal. They slip into the dormitory, where they read their English assignments and play their radio (against school rules), until it is time for bed. Ch 2 The morning after the boys first jump from the tree, Mr. Prud’homme, a substitute Master for the summer, scolds Gene and Finny for missing dinner. Finny tells Mr. Prud’homme that they were late because they were jumping out of the tree to prepare for military service—a far-fetched excuse he weaves into a long, funny explanation. Then upon being interviewed, observe all interview rules and be prepared to prove your claims. A well prepared individual walking into an interview is more likely to land the job. When you perform research on a company you have an interview with, it signals interest to the employer.For example, one might be able to state the sales quota from the previous month. Then you are prepared to state how you can be an asset to the company. If you pursue your job hunt in a detailed, professional manner, the employer could possibly view you performing the job in the same manner. Setting up a career research interview could get your foot in the door and possibly the job. The personnel office is like a road block. Try to avoid it because its job is to screen out the interviewee. You want to go in and ask if you can be interviewed by the person who has the power to interview.Make no mistake: the personnel office still has the power to say no and tell you to expect a phone call to be interviewed at a later date. If you cannot get past the personnel office for a twenty minute face-to-face interview with the interviewer, keep your research ongoing. Now let’s say you got the job interview, you must observe the interview rules. First you must be converse where you get fifty percent of the interview as well as the interviewer. Next you must not let your answers be shorter than twenty seconds, or longer than two minutes. Then you must try to prove how you can be an asset to the company, and be able to prove it.The first impression with the interviewer should be professionally set in stone. Succeeding at an interview is what will land you the job. Taking the time to perform a detailed research shows y our desirable interest. Asking to be interviewed by the person in charge can help you cross that barrier of being screened out by the personnel office. They decided to air just one thirty second commercial during the Seinfeld finale. The Hippocampus in the Limbic System The hippocampus is the part of the brain that is involved in forming, organizing, and storing memories. It is a limbic system structure that is particularly important in forming new memories and connecting emotions and senses, such as smell and sound, to memories. The hippocampus is a horseshoe shaped  structure, with an arching band of nerve fibers (fornix) connecting the hippocampal structures in the left and right brain hemispheres. The hippocampus is found in the brains temporal lobes and acts as a memory indexer by sending memories out to the appropriate part of the cerebral hemisphere for long-term storage and retrieving them when necessary. Anatomy The hippocampus is the main structure of the hippocampal formation, which is composed of two gyri (brain folds) and the subiculum. The two gyri, the dentate gyrus and Ammons horn (cornu ammonis), form interlocking connections with one another. The dentate gyrus is folded and nestled within the hippocampal sulcus (brain indentation). Neurogenesis (new neuron formation) in the adult brain occurs in the dentate gyrus, which receives input from other brain areas and aids in new memory formation, learning, and spacial memory. Ammons horn is another name for the hippocampus major or hippocampus proper. It is divided into three fields (CA1, CA2, and CA3) that process, send, and receive input from other brain regions. Ammons horn is continuous with the subiculum, which acts as the main output source of the hippocampal formation. The subiculum connects with the parahippocampal gyrus, a region of the cerebral cortex that surrounds the hippocampus. The parahippocampal gyrus is involved in memor y storage and recall. This function is necessary for learning, which relies on memory retention and proper consolidation of new memories. This ability is necessary in order to navigate ones environment. The hippocampus also works in concert with the amygdala to consolidate our emotions and long-term memories. This process is critical for evaluating information in order to respond appropriately to situations. Location Directionally, the hippocampus is located within the  temporal lobes, adjacent to the  amygdala. Disorders As the hippocampus is linked to cognitive ability and memory retention, people who experience damage to this area of the brain have difficulty recalling events.  The hippocampus has been the focus of attention for the medical community as it relates to memory disorders such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, epilepsy, and Alzheimers disease. Alzheimers disease,  for example, damages the hippocampus by causing tissue loss. Studies have shown that Alzheimers patients who maintain their cognitive ability have a larger hippocampus than those with dementia. Chronic seizures, as experienced by individuals with epilepsy, also damage the hippocampus, causing amnesia and other memory-related problems.  Prolonged emotional stress negatively impacts the hippocampus as stress causes the body to release cortisol, which can damage neurons of the hippocampus. Alcohol is also thought to negatively impact the hippocampus when consumed in excess. Alcohol influences certain neurons in the hippocampus, inhibiting some brain receptors and activating others. These neurons manufacture steroids which interfere with learning and memory formation resulting in alcohol-related blackouts. Heavy long term drinking has also been shown to lead to tissue loss in the hippocampus. MRI scans of the brain indicate that alcoholics tend to have a smaller hippocampus than those who are not heavy drinkers. The second stage of radiation sickness began 10-15 days after the bombing. Signs exhibited included hair loss, diarrhea, and fever. Then 25-30 days after the bombing, new symptoms began to develop. These symptoms included blood disorders, a drastic drop in white blood cell count (WBC), a rise in i nfections due to the drop of WBC, hemorrhages, slow healing of simple wounds, and anemia. The third stage followed after, and lasted anywhere from one week to several months or longer. The primary symptom was the fluctuation in the white blood cell count. After the WBC had stabilized, wounds would finally begin to heal. As the burns healed, keloid scars formed. Keloid scars were â€Å"hideously ugly, thick, itchy, rubbery, copper-red crablike growths. † There was, at that time, no reliable literature on treatment for these scars. Doctors found that if they removed the keloids, the often returned. Yet, if left untreated, the keloids would sometimes become infected and affect the surrounding muscles. The survivors also had a higher incidence of leukemia- 10 to 50 times higher than the norm. Other types of cancer were also higher among the survivors. Many survivors developed â€Å"A-bomb cataracts†, children's growth was stunted, as well as various long term heath problems like â€Å"anemia, liver dysfunction, sexual problems, endocrine disorders, and accelerated aging. † â€Å"The Japanese tended to shy away from the term ‘survivors'. . .. † and instead referred to them as â€Å"hibakusha†, or â€Å"explosion affected persons. † The hibakusha's â€Å"lived in an economic limbo† as the Japanese government didn't want to acknowledge them. By not acknowledging them, the government didn't have to accept â€Å"moral responsibility for the heinous acts of the victorious United States. † At this point, â€Å"the anger of many hibakusha. . . modulated towards their own government. † There were no special provisions provided for the hibakusha until 1957. In 1957, the A-Bomb Victims Medical Care Law was established. This provided support, free medical treatment, and eventually monthly allowances for the hibakusha's. However, many hibakusha's initially rejected it as they had â€Å"a suspicion of ulterior motives. † Employers developed a prejudice against the hibakusha due to their â€Å"A-Bomb sickness; a nagging weakness and weariness, dizziness now and then, digestive troubles, all aggravated by a feeling of oppression, a sense of doom. . . † Surprisingly, there was a divided opinion about the use of the bomb on Hiroshima. Father Siemes stated that, â€Å"Some of us consider the bomb in the same category as poison gas and were against its use on a civilian population. Others were in the opinion that in total war. . . there was no difference between civilians and soldiers. . . † Hiroshima was engulfed by devastation from the instant the atomic bomb went off, and for many years to follow. Over 100,000 lost their lives, and the survivors, or hibakusha, lost the lives they once knew. As we move forward with new technology, we must look to the ahead to see the future outcomes new technologies could hold. Hopefully, as we look to the future, we remember that atomic power can be devastating. It is amazing that something so small could nearly level an entire city, cost thousands their lives, and still has reverberating effects long after the dust has settled.

But are we really free to choose? Who is it to say that our source of information does not choose our information for us? Are we, despite having freedom of choice, not at all This idea formed the basis of our selected topic of research and led to the exploration of truth manipulation in the current media landscape.AIMS & OBJECTIVES Firstly to create awareness amongst the public about techniques employed by media corporation to spin truths and push their political and social agendas and opinions upon s ociety. Grassroots is where this movement must begin and it is our aim to assist such a cause. RESEARCH METHODS This project cente rs around research and investigation.In order to absorb and analyze as much information as possible on the chosen topic of truth manipulation, we have decided to employ several vastly different research methods. Initial investigation began by conducting a ‘cultural probe'. This method is a first- hand data gathering attempt. The exercise involved using five people to participate in series of news, media and communication related activities. The aim of this method is more about gathering inspiration than information. The outcomes and results of this method are outlined below in the section entitled ‘Cultural Probe Results'.Secondary research took the form of a literature review, as included on the following pages. Each group member selected or was assigned a series of literature and information sources to investigate and report. Sources included documentaries, films, publications, Journals, articles, case studies and electronic resources. Both global and local issues were explored. This form of research aided a better understanding of our topic, and helped us form individual and collective opinions of the issues arising. The outcome is the following argumentative essay.At the point of writing this research proposal, third and fourth methods of investigation are being discussed.
